This medal was struck in the memory of Jean-Claude Roussel who was the son of the founder of the Roussel Laboratories, Gaston Roussel.

Pharmacist, he became CEO of the Roussel Laboratories in 1947. Roussel was one of the major French pharmaceutical companies, specialized in the production of steroids, analgesics, corticoids and antibiotics.

When Jean-Claude Roussel dramatically passed away in 1972 in a helicopter crash, the Roussel company became incorporated into the German company Hoechst.
