A College of Medicine was established in Rouen as soon as 1605. The School of Medicine and Pharmacy was then created in 1841.

The obverse represents Marius Le Pigny (1554-1633) who was the founder of the College of Medicine and the canon of the Rouen cathedral.

A bronze model also exists.
