This medal was struck in 1972 by the Latvian Pharmacology Society to commemorate Oswald Smidebergs. O. Smidebergs was one of the founder of the modern pharmacology. He studied medicine at Tartu University and got his M.D. degree in 1866. After teaching pharmacology in Tartu and Leipzig, he became the head of the pharmacology institute of Strasbourg in 1872.
