Dr Edward Robinson Squibb spent a decade in the US Navy before setting up a laboratory and pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1858. He started by manufacturing portable chests for the surgeons during the Civil War. The Squibb Company then became famous by opening the world’s largest penicillin manufacturing plant in 1944. Squibb merged with Bristol-Myers in 1989.
