Daniel Hanbury was a renowned British pharmacologist and botanist who died at 49 in 1875. To commemorate D. Hanbury, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society decided to create an award medal in his memory –  for ‘high excellence in the prosecution or promotion of original research in the Natural History and Chemistry of Drugs.’

The first medal was awarded in 1881.
