Born in Valognes (Manche), Théophile-Jules Pelouze studied pharmacy and became the assistant of Gay-Lussac. He was appointed pharmacy intern at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris in 1829. He became professor of chemistry in Lille in 1830, then at the College de France in Paris, until 1851. He synthetized the formic acid, he analyzed and characterized the lactic acid, the glycerin, the nitroglycerin. He then became President of the money and medals administration and the director of the Paris Mint in 1848.
