John Burrows, Doctor of Physic, patented a vegetable syrup in 1772. However, P. Mercier and J. Swainson introduced a competitive product in 1781, the Velno’s Vegetable syrup to treat venereal disease but also the gout, rheumatism, palsy, apoplexy, impotency, barrenness, scrofula, consumption and scurvy.
